This no-stakes exercise about Bicycle’s ordinary Rummy separates two ideas: extending a matched structure already on the table, and placing a separately complete group. These labels are not universal across every Rummy variant.
What “laying off” means here
In the Bicycle description, laying off means adding a card to an already displayed matched set or sequence. That starting structure matters. The added card does not begin an independent meld merely because it is placed near other cards. See the Bicycle ordinary Rummy rules for the referenced variant.
In this worksheet, imagine that the table already shows hearts 4, hearts 5, hearts 6. Those cards form the displayed sequence. If hearts 7 is added to its end, it extends the existing sequence. The important relationship is between the new card and the sequence already shown.
Why spades 9 does not extend that run
Hypothetical example: place spades 9 beside hearts 4, 5, 6, and 7. It does not continue that hearts sequence. Its suit and rank do not supply the next card in that run, so this placement cannot be described as laying off onto it.
Do not judge the cards only by physical closeness. Ask two separate questions: “Is there an existing displayed set or sequence?” and “Does this card belong to that structure?” A “yes” to only the first question is insufficient.
Laying off versus a separate meld
Hypothetical contrast: suppose the hand also contains clubs 9, diamonds 9, and hearts 9. Taken together, those three cards are a separately complete group under the ordinary matching idea used in this exercise. Placing that group differs from extending the hearts sequence from four through seven: it creates its own structure rather than extending the displayed run.
Mark the worksheet with two labels: existing structure and separate group. This classification describes the diagram, not which move to prefer.
