The nondealer chooses first; after a pass, the dealer chooses. Two passes lead to the nondealer drawing from stock. This is the opening order in Bicycle's Gin Rummy description.
Give the roles names before drawing arrows
Hypothetical no-stakes worksheet: Mira is the nondealer and Dev is the dealer. Write that assignment above the diagram, not inside a branch. Roles identify the starting conditions; accepting or passing supplies the later branch labels. Keeping them separate makes an accidental name swap easier to detect.
Label the starting state X, with result boxes A, B and C. These are worksheet labels, not game terms. Leave card ranks out: this exercise concerns decision order, not which card is desirable.
Check that each branch has a complete history
Annotate A with an acceptance at the first decision, B with a pass followed by acceptance, and C with two passes. Trace each path from X with a pencil. Stop when its result box is reached instead of continuing into a neighbouring branch.
Now cover the middle of path B. Its final box alone no longer shows how it was reached. Mark the missing part as incomplete rather than inventing an answer. This demonstrates why a cropped diagram cannot establish the full opening sequence.
Try a second check by deliberately moving Dev's name into the first decision box. Compare the changed diagram with the role assignment at the top. Correct the mismatch on the worksheet; do not reinterpret the source to make the mistaken label fit.
Separate reading accuracy from playing advice
A completed worksheet should show a role key, labelled branches and an unbroken path to each result. It records alternatives without recommending one. A reader who cannot explain an arrow should mark that arrow for clarification.
