This is a no-stakes paper exercise based on the Bicycle 500 Rum variant. It tests what “above” means in a discard pile: the cards physically placed later, not cards with numerically higher ranks. The rule applies only when the selected discard is used immediately in a meld or layoff.
Set up the paper pile
Hypothetical example: Place four paper cards in order, bottom to top:
clubs 4 → hearts 6 → spades 9 → diamonds Queen
The hearts 6 is the buried discard being examined. Imagine that the reader has already prepared a compatible meld for hearts 6, so its immediate use is satisfied for this exercise.
Read “above” as a physical position
Starting at hearts 6 and moving towards the top, the cards above it are spades 9 and diamonds Queen. Therefore, taking the hearts 6 also requires taking the 9 and Queen. The clubs 4 remains in the pile because it is below the chosen card.
The complete pickup is consequently hearts 6, spades 9 and diamonds Queen. It is not a choice between the 9 and Queen. Once the buried 6 is selected, both cards physically above it come along.
This does not mean “all cards greater than 6”. The 9 and Queen happen to have higher ranks here, but that is incidental. If a 3 had been placed above the 6, that 3 would still be included; if a King had been below the 6, it would still be excluded.
What the exercise establishes
Number the paper positions from bottom to top before marking the pickup boundary. Check the marked cards against those positions, not their printed values. This verifies the diagram without suggesting which discard is desirable.
